Our vision is to create a connected Network of Environmental Stewards that empowers communities to care for their homes by implementing Indigenous-led and community-driven monitoring and research programs that are grounded in Indigenous values and Traditional Knowledge.
Our mission is to train and equip communities with the skills, technology, and tools to conduct environmental monitoring and implement community-driven research. We weave together Indigenous methodologies and Traditional Knowledge with scientific data to implement effective ecosystem stewardship and ways of caring for our lands, waters, and homes.
When you are ready to join the Network and start a monitoring program, contact us and we will hep you in designing and creating a Program using ISN's platform.
Sentinels (e.g., Guardians, ISN App users, data collectors, community members; etc.) can download the mobile application to collect data and share observations about their environment. Using the mobile app, Sentinels will document patterns and fill out survey forms that will be uploaded to their community’s privacy protected database.
Once a community or organization joins the Network and creates a monitoring program, Sentinels (e.g., ISN App users, data collectors, and community members) can download the mobile application to collect data and share observations about their environment. Using the mobile app, Sentinels will document patterns and fill out survey forms that will be uploaded to their community’s database. From their, the community admin will support with data assurance, synthesis, and sharing information back to the broader Network based on the program’s priorities and data sharing permissions. ISN helps facilitate community-led research, braiding Indigenous Knowledge with Western science to understand and address environmental shifts and help fill data gaps.
ISN supports environmental monitoring and Indigenous-led research by providing tools and training needed for data collection and the development of community-driven monitoring research projects. Indigenous Peoples have always been Knowledge holders, data collectors, and stewards, and in our Network we believe that data has power and together, we can ensure a sustainable future for our ecosystems.
Data Quality control mechanisms for community-driven monitoring that can support robust data collection quality assurance, review and analysis.
Accessible and easy-to-use software for communities to gather environmental and biological data.
Data sovereignty and ownership of information (proprietary, sensitive, confidential) is central to the ISN Platform design, ensuring that there are secure and flexible layers of protection for storing, exporting, and importing data. Following CARE Principles.
Data at local and regional scales that can be collected in a coordinated manner and aggregated from multiple communities. Through the Network, ISN offers the ability to scale information and connect to other databases to support local and regional management needs.
